대학에서 전자공학을, 대학원에서 사진을 공부한 뒤 순수사진가로 활동.자연과 정화에 대한 관심으로 우포늪을 찍는 사진가로, MBC환경 캠페인 공익광고 와 로드리포터, VLUU등 각종 사진전문 잡지에 자연풍경등을 기고 하고 있다. 그는 2008년 제10차 세계 람사르총회 공식사진가로 초대 되었으며. 람사르 재단 홍보대사이기도 하다. 사진집으로는 『평화의 마을』 (삼성출판사,1993), 『우포늪』 (눈빛출판사, 2008), 『밤이 가고 낮이 가는 사이에』 (성바오로출판사 ,2009), 『우포의 편지』 (몽트, 2015), 『우포, 지독한 끌림』 (포토닷, 2017), 『지독한 끌림』 (다빈치출판사, 2020)등이 있으며 동아대학교 등에서 순수예술 사진등을 강의하고 그리고 2011년에는 미국 유명 예술대학교인 샌프란시스코에 있는 AAU - Academy of Art University에서 초빙교수로 초대되기도 했다.

Organized groups such as Gangneung Affiliate Association in 1935, Busan Art Photography Research Association in 1947, Korea Photographers Association in 1952, and Korea Creative Photographers Association in 1964. Served as a reporter for the Incheon Landing in 1950, and hosted < The Family of Man > at Gyeongbokgung Museum of Art, Korea in 1957. Created the photography section in Korean Art Exhibition (National Exhibition), and served as the organizer of the 1998 ‘Year of Photography and Video’. Received the Seoul Culture Award in 1960, Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award in 1971, and the Eunkwan Culture Award in 1989.
He is regarded as a pioneer of Korean Photography, advocated ‘lifestyle photography’ in the 1950s and established the theoretical system of photography and its status as an art. He recorded Korea’s traditional cultural heritage, artists, and the changing urban landscape through a series of works like ‘Korean architecture’, ‘Korean Artist’, and ‘Myeongdong’. Reviewing many of his achievements not only as a photographer but also as an educator, it can easily be said that he is unique in the history of Korean photography.
